stories for my feelings

I have this AI skill that I use to calculate my overwhelm levels.

I built it from a self-assessment test for alexithymic people, because I tend not to see a crisis coming until I'm knee-deep in it, and then it explodes into this whole mess.. and well. Now I have this skill to calculate a score from my daily journal, to try to see those crises coming and deal with them before they explode.

When I fire the skill, it reads my last 7 daily notes, gives me a weekly score, a color code for the day (green, orange, red - depending on the level of activation it reads), and explains the score with a little analysis. Nothing fancy.

The score is overall helpful, I don't always agree with it but I do feel like I'm able to see crises coming more effectively. At first, the reads always feel a bit superficial. Telling me back stuff I already wrote. But being told "you keep coming back to this in this way" turns out to actually be helpful.

To get REAL personal and to give you a clear example: last Wednesday, there was a mix-up in my family's communication, and my brother thought I was babysitting my nephew for a couple of hours, but I wasn't aware of that, so I didn't show up. Nothing dramatic, and not my fault. But I did send a message to my brother apologizing because... well 'cause. He didn't reply. Again, nothing exceptional. I went about my week as usual.

Today, my skill pointed out I had mentioned his silence several times over the past few days. Me, deep in my internet stuff and usually dictating my journal in a stream-of-consciousness kind of way, I had NOT realized it at all. But upon self-inspection, I was indeed worried my brother was mad at me.

A couple of months ago, I would have left it at that, worried about it some more in my head, but I would not actually have done anything about it.

Today though, I did. I talked about it with my mum, in a way that felt casual and totally normal. And damn if I don't feel lighter about it.

Now you have to understand how exceptional it is for me to talk about my 'little' feelings with my family. It's HUGE. And I think this skill has a lot to do with it. Not really because it flagged it, but because it gave it a story.

It's silly, but it's helpful to have your own story said in other words, from someone who isn't you. It helps with distance, with wording, and in my case, it helps give it its proper space and importance.
